Director’s Statement
Around 10pm on a weeknight (deadline looming), I was racking my brain for ideas. Feeling uninspired about my next script, I jokingly wished for a muse to take over the project. And so, The Muse was born!
I started with the image of a hallway at the location we’d been assigned to shoot at, and I looked for ways to remove that space from its quotidian office building associations. With The Muse, I wanted to explore the relationship between art and fear, as well as the artist’s absolute impulse to exercise creativity. The myriad sources of artistic inspiration is a subject of personal fascination stemming from my longtime interest in art history.
In keeping with the surreal and dreamlike images I wanted to create with The Muse, I tried to leave the story as open-ended as possible so that the viewer may decide:
Who is the muse?
