Director’s Statement

Inspired by two of my favorite films, Persona (1966) and Mulholland Drive (2001), I wanted to create Starling to explore the relationship between our public identities and our private perceptions of ourselves. To do this, I thought it would be interesting to create an emotional portrait of a lonely housewife. I imagined her as a doll sitting alone in an empty house, an accessory to her husband. As the line between dreams and reality becomes blurred, her sense of self is shaken by her desires. Many of the scenes take place in front of a mirror—she looks at the image of herself and tries to maintain her facade of perfection, just as we the audience look back at her and watch as she becomes unable to mask her true self any longer.
